Happy New Year!

There's plenty of bands on the Cape to help bring in the New Year and many are just a mile away in downtown Hyannis. Chain Drive is playing at the British Beer Company on Main Street. The Incredible Casuals, the Greenheads and Sarah Swain will be the the Island Merchant also on Main St in Hyannis. Ricky King Russell Band will be at Harry's Blues Bar in Hyannis. Right down the street from the Tidewater, Nuthi Fancy and Mike Ardolino and Prism Rock 'n Dance Band will be at 4Bros Bistro which is located at the Cove Resort.

Those who want a quieter evening with dinner, most of the local restaurants including Yarmouth House, Alberto's, the Roadhouse are offering New Year's Eve special dinners. There's also comedy at the Comedy Lounge, inside the Radisson Hotel, with Iro Proctor & Friends.

So if you haven't made New Year's plans yet, come to the Cape, relax in our pool during the day and celebrate the New Year in the evening. However you choose to celebrate, my best wishes for a happy, healthy, and peaceful 2009.

New Year's Eve

The end of the year is already here and a great way to say goodbye to 2008 and usher in 2009 is at Chatham's First Night. The 18th annual First Night will get started around noon on Dec 31st with the town photo in front of Chatham Lighthouse. From there dozens of entertainment features, featuring music and culture from the 40's, will get started around town. The culmination will at midnight when Chatham's unique "Countdown Cod will be dropped from a bucket truck at Oyster Pond with fireworks erupting behind it. Countdown Cod is a giant aluminum creature designed and built by First Night committee vice chairman, Richard Clifford.

A big bonfire on the beach on the evening of the fireworks allows kids too young to stay up until midnight to enjoy the New Year's Eve celebrations. Buttons are still available for the events, although there are several events that do not need the button for participation. For a complete list of activities and merchants selling the buttons visit, www.firstnightchatham.com.

It's Back!

In the beginning of 2008 I wrote a blog about the shipwreck that was uncovered after a storm in January. The storm revealed a skeleton of a shipwrecked schooner which became an attraction for locals and tourists alike. It was left on the beach so that nature could take its course.

Recent storms have again uncovered more of the shipwreck at Newcomb Hollow beach in Wellfleet, giving a fresh view of the old wooden vessel. With the wonderfully warm weather we've had recently, it's a good opportunity to take a ride to Wellfleet take advantage of this unique opportunity to and walk the beach and view the shipwreck.

Happy Holidays

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish those who celebrate Christmas a very merry Christmas and those who celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, happy holidays. I hope you can take some time from the craziness of the preparations to enjoy the day with family and friends. Sometimes we try so hard to make sure that everything is perfect that we loose sight of beauty of the season. Enjoy!

Christmas thoughts

As Christmas nears, I've run out of Cape Cod Christmas activities (or maybe burned out!) I've always loved Christmas, especially the decorating and cooking. I've always tried to make my home warm and cozy during Christmas with the trees, greens and holly, Santas, nutcrackers and the warm glow of lights at night. With our new house, I was again able to decorate after 3 years of not having our own home and it looks beautiful. My favorite time is in the evening, sitting in the family room with the fireplace and only the lights from the tree. If only life could be so simple!

My least favorite part is shopping and the whole present thing. We've shaved off our list so that we basically buy for only our girls, so that simplifies things. My girls started a tradition of making us gifts for Christmas when they were young and they still get together before Christmas and come up with unique handmade gifts. On Christmas morning, they are so excited for us to see them, that they make us open our gifts first. I look forward to this every year. They have become very talented and creative in their gifts and surprise us with something different every year. All those years of doing arts and crafts with them when they were young paid off!

Being Greek, cooking and pushing food on people is big in our family. The traditional desserts I make are baklava, kourabethes, koulouria, and yalaktobouriko (my favorite). This is certainly not the time to diet.

I hope you all enjoy your own traditions and take the time to enjoy friends and family.

Bass River Cookie Stroll

I found another wonderful Christmas activity for those who still need help getting into the spirit or those who love to take advantage of every opportunity to celebrate Christmas: the Historic Bass River Holiday Cookie Stroll. Anything with the word "cookie" in it is appealing to me. This benefits the South Yarmouth Library and is held Saturday from 10:30 to 3:00pm.

The "ticket" for the stroll is actually a cookbook with recipes of all cookies served on this walking tour through historic Bass River to 12 sites. The cookbook comes with a festive drawstring bag for collecting cookies along the way. My bag, of course, would be empty since I would be eating them along the way. Tickets are $12 from all Bank of America branches.

Osterville's Christmas Stroll

Most towns had their Christmas strolls last weekend, but Osterville's will be this evening. It is their 39th year! The downtown closes to traffic and is open to foot traffic only. From what I have heard it's like a big block party.

My husband and I discovered Osterville a few months ago when we were house hunting. We loved the town and the picturesque downtown with it's quaint village atmosphere. I think this is one of the least commercial strolls where one can imagine old fashioned Christmases where everyone walked downtown and met their neighbors.

The weather is actually great on the Cape. While many towns have had ice storms, the Cape just had rain and the sun actually came out today. If you want to get away from the ice and winter mess, come to the Cape and enjoy our manager's special of two nights for $99.99.

Christmas Classic Theater

What is more representative of Christmas than Dickens, "A Christmas Carol"? This classic story has become synonymous with Christmas. I read the book to my children when they were young and we watched the movie every Christmas.

Everybody is familiar with the Dickens story of miser Scrooge's redemption complete with flying ghosts, but there's a version playing on the Cape with a slightly different perspective. "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol" written by Tom Mula and presented by The Academy of Performing Arts is playing through December 14th in Orleans. This version tells the story through the eyes of Scrooge's dead partner. The play, directed by Peter Earle, features just four actors costumed in black and simple staging. I haven't seen the play, but it sounds like an interesting take on a classic story.

For more information on the play call the Academy of Performing Arts at 508-255-1963.

Madeline's Christmas

I have two daughters who are now 27 and almost 29. When they were young, we had a ritual of cuddling up after their evening bath and I would read them wonderful children's books. After they started to read they would sometimes read their favorite books to me. When we were living in Mobile, Alabama, one of our neighbors gave them books on two charming, mischievous, and feisty young girls. One was Eloise who lived at the Park Plaza and the other was Madeline who was an orphan in Paris. Eloise was definitely the spoiled rich girl who put her nanny through hell at times, but what I liked about both girls was their independent and fearless spirit.

All these wonderful memories of snuggling together while enjoying books came back to me when I saw in the paper that Ludwing Bemelmans', Madeline's Christmas (the musical) is being presented by Harwich Winter Theatre from December 12-30th.

"In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived 12 little girls in two straight lines. They left the house at half past nine...the smallest one was Madeline." Thus begins the first Madeline book. These twelve little girls always dressed the same and wore flat sailor hats. Madeline always stood out because she was mischievous, courageous and fearless.

Seeing the play would be a fun evening for both parents and children and a great way to usher in Christmas. In addition to being a fun activity, it's also educational and introduces children to literature and the theatre. For more information on the play, call their box office at 508-432-2002.

Unique Gifts from Cape Cod

If you are like me and haven't started your Christmas shopping, or have a beach lover on your list, Cape Cod offers some unique choices. While you're shopping you can also enjoy the unique flavor of the small Cape villages and towns. The very popular Cape Cod bracelet with its classic double ball is now available in both earrings and necklaces. It's the one item that guest ask me about most often. The beauty is in its simplicity with just a narrow band terminating in two double balls. There's also nautical jewelry available in sterling or gold. Some of the most dramatic I've seen feature starfish, scallop shells, and sand dollars. Almost all Cape jewelers and gift shops offer these items. Of course, the best quality will be found at jewelry stores.

Cape Annie's Lighthouse, Mrs. Mitchell's Gifts, Linda's Originals, Dennisport General Store are some stores offering gifts with nautical themes such as lighthouses. There's also galleries with blown glass in Hyannis and Sandwich. This is just a short list. Every town has its own unique gift shops. The fun part is exploring the Cape towns and you are actually enjoying Holiday shopping instead of fighting the crowds.
Happy shopping!

Christmas by the Sea, Chatham

Chatham is one of the most picturesque towns on the Cape and only a twenty minute drive from the Tidewater. This weekend they also have a Christmas festival which is the 30th annual "Christmas by the Sea". Friday, Dec 5 at 4:30PM, Main Street will be brimming with locals and visitors for the annual tree trimming at Sears Park. Town officials will be flipping on the lights, but children decorate the tree with homemade ornaments. Bell ringers and hayrides from 4 to 7PM will set the mood.

The festivities continue on Saturday with more hay rides and people strolling down Main Street and into the shops for shopping specials and refreshments. Santa arrives on Sunday at 1:30PM at Fish Pier and then to the Community Center where he listens to children while The Chatham Town Band plays. The festivities continue the following weekend with all the stores staying open late for the stroll and offering cookies and hot drinks. Dec 13th is the 12th annual historic inn tour, featuring 10 inns decked out in all their holiday finery.

As I said, Chatham is only a short drive from the Tidewater and we continue to offer our weekend special price of $59.99 per night for Friday and Saturday and $49.99 for Sunday - Thursday. Come to the Cape where you can relax and enjoy small town Christmas traditions.

Get Into the Christmas Spirit

Next weekend (12/5-12/7) is a wonderful time to come to Cape Cod to get into the real Christmas spirit. Almost all the small Cape Cod towns have their version of a Christmas walk or Christmas stroll. The towns are all decked out for Christmas, there's caroling, hot cider, merchant open houses and specials, tree lightnings, boat parades, and many more activities. The next few blogs will be about the activities in the different towns, but today I'll write about one of the most famous Christmas strolls which attracts thousands of visitors from around the world: "Nantucket Noel and Christmas Stroll".

It started 35 years ago as a small island festival down Nantucket's cobblestone Main Street and has blossomed into an island wide, month long celebration. "It's all about warm, cozy fireplaces, caroling under the stars, warm cider and all of the holiday traditions that many folks really enjoy". Sounds like a perfect way to get away from the shopping frenzy and commercialism of Christmas for a feel of a small town Christmas.

Streets are lined with lit Christmas trees, and in addition to the traditional carolers, local musicians also perform, including a Capella groups and a blues band or two. While this tradition is now a month long, the "Annual Nantucket Christmas Stroll Weekend" is this weekend from December 5th to the 7th. If you'd prefer to avoid the crowds you can visit Nantucket midweek. For more information, visit www.nantucketchamber.org.

The Tidewater is only 5 minutes to the ferry for Nantucket. Our heated pool and hot tub are a welcome relief after a day of festivities and our 50's style diner is open on Saturdays and Sundays for an hearty breakfast. We are offering a special rate of $59.99 for the weekend.

Dining on Cape Cod for Thanksgiving

As I mentioned in my earlier blog, there are many dining options on Cape Cod from very casual to fine dining. Reservations are recommended for all restaurants so I have listed the phones numbers. The restaurants are usually booked solid for Thanksgiving so I would recommend making your reservations early.

The Yarmouth House which is about 3/4 of a mile from the Tidewater is serving Thanksgiving dinner with all the traditional fixings from 12:00 to 7:PM (508-771-5154).

Abbicci Contemporary Mediterranean Bistro in Yarmouthport will be serving dinner from 12:30 to 6:30 (508-362-3501)They are a smaller restaurant and offer an more intimate atmosphere with beautiful presentation of exquisitely prepared food.

Ocean House in Dennis is serving dinner from 12:00 to 5:00PM (508-394-0700. The Ocean House has a breathtaking view of Nantucket Sound and their food is exceptional.

There are several more offering dinner, I picked the closest ones. If anyone needs more recommendations, give me a call at 508-775-6322. Thanksgiving on Cape Cod Central Railroad

I can't believe that it's already time to start thinking of Thanksgiving. If you don't have a family get together to attend, why not head down to the Cape. It's a wonderful time to relax, unwind, treat yourself to dinner out and start or finish Christmas shopping on Black Friday. Many guests have been asking me for restaurants serving Thanksgiving Dinner so I am compiling a local list. I'll have that ready in a couple of days.

While checking out the options, I came across a very interesting alternative to the traditional restaurants. The Cape Cod Central Railroad is offering Thanksgiving Dinner from 12:30 to 3:30. The train runs a two hour scenic from Hyannis to the Cape Cod Canal. Along the way you'll pass beautiful cranberry bogs, natural woodlands, and lush marshes and the Cape Cod Canal. The Cape Cod Railroad offers many different excursions and I'll detail some of those on a later blog. Imagine being served Thanksgiving dinner on the train as the train travels through beautiful scenery. It's like taking a trip through time. Guests rave about the food. The only problem I've heard is that sometimes the plates shift as the train makes turns! Sounds like fun! To get more information, visit their website, www.capetrain.com, or call 508-771-3800. DiParma Italian Table

When visiting Cape Cod and staying at the Tidewater it's nice to have the option of taking a short walk to a restaurant for lunch or dinner. There are several counter service restaurants and sandwich shops within walking distance, but we finally have a wonderful full-serve restaurant a very short walk away. They have been open a couple of months and already have quite a following of locals and tourists. The Zambelis family, who also own and operate the well-known and popular Yarmouth House and Christopher's Restaurant, purchased the old Clancy's Restaurant and transformed it into a warm, cozy Tuscan restaurant.

The outside was totally redone and with its warm colors, columns and stucco look could have come straight from Tuscany. The interior was also extensively revamped and has an informal country Italian look with both tables and comfortable, private booths. The food, of course Italian, ranges from traditional Italian favorites to simply pizza and salad. They present a wonderful large bowl of "insalata" for the entire table with refills on the house. They serve dinner until 10PM but their lounge offers pizza and appetizer until midnight. If you prefer to relax in your room instead of going out to dinner, everything on their menu is available to go. DiParma's is a wonderful addition to our neighborhood. Halloween Fun

Halloween is being celebrated throughout Cape Cod this weekend. For theatre buffs, the "Invisible Man", an H.G. Wells thriller, adapted by J. Hagenbuckle is playing at Harwich Junior Theatre in West Harwich. If anyone has seen the 1933 film, you'll remember the frightening invisible man with his head wrapped in bandages and wearing googles and gloves to cover his invisibility. According to Hagenbuckle, he followed the book as to the idea of the mad scientist and the invisibility formula and his madness, but "wrote him as a complete, sympathetic heroic figure, someone to root for and care about". For more information, visit www.hjtcapecod.or or www.capetix.com.

For those of you who prefer to party on Halloween, there are Halloween parties at many bars and restaurants. The British Bear Company and the Roo Bar on Main Street in Hyannis are both offering live music and a Halloween party. For the more sedate crowd, Oliver's Restaurant on 6A is also featuring good food and live music. Of course there's much more going on, so come on down!

Plymouth

My husband and I just purchased a home in Plymouth, where we will be residing when I am not on property at the Tidewater. After traveling back and forth several times a week to clean and prepare our home before we move, I've come to realize that Plymouth is actually closer than many towns on the Cape. Before the Cape Cod Canal, Plymouth was actually considered part of the Cape.

For visitors to the Cape, Plymouth only half an hour away, makes for a wonderful day trip or a stop on the way to or from the Cape. Of course, everyone knows about Plymouth Plantation, which is a step back in time to see how the Pilgrims lived, but there is much more to Plymouth. I enjoy visiting downtown Plymouth and the waterfront with its many shops, restaurants, attractions and snack bars. It's a great place to walk around, sit on a bench and watch the boats, visit Pilgrim museum, Plymouth Rock and, of course, one of my favorite activities, people watching.

While I'll be spending most of my time at the Tidewater, where I presently live, tending to the hotel and customers' needs, I'll now have a peaceful retreat away from work and a lovely town to explore. Living where I work definitely has its advantages, but there's one negative: there's never getting away from work! Hope to see you in Plymouth!

It starts at a typical New England village green, through rolling farmland and around cranberry bogs, to the Nobska Light and along Vineyard Sound. The race will include 1270 entrants competing for the full marathon and 800 runners running in a relay team.

This marathon also marks the 100th 26.2 mile road race for a Vineyard Haven "legend", Bill Brown. Bill began running marathons in 1989 and along the way has become a role model to many. He used to be overweight and smoked 3 pack of cigarettes a day! More than 100 of his friends will be there for support and to help him celebrate his 100th marathon.

Prime Dining at Moderate Prices

As I mentioned before, Cape Cod has some of the finest restaurants and eating on the Cape is much more pleasurable and economical during the off season. First, there's no long lines and to entice the customer on slow days, many of the best restaurants are offering special pricing during the off peak hours or days. One of my favorite, the Ocean House, which has exquisite cuisine and breathe taking views offers a three course prix fixed menu of $25 all night. This price includes appetizer, entree, and dessert and is a fraction of the regular cost. The only blackout days are on Saturday and holidays.

Many other restaurants also offer early bird specials if you eat between 5pm and 6pm. The Yarmouth House, down the street from the Tidewater, offers this special. Sad News

We were all sad to hear that Dennis, the manatee that had strayed into Sesuit Harbor, died in Orlando yesterday after a 27 hour trip. He had suffered from being in the cold water and his temperature had dropped to 73 degrees which is 24 degrees below normal. Every effort was made to bring him to his native surroundings, but unfortunately, the stress was too much for him. He definitely wouldn't have made it if he was left in the north, so many agencies and individuals coordinated their efforts to give him a chance. Cape Cod residents fell in love with him during his short stay and we are all saddened to hear he didn't make it after such a long journey.

Manatee Mania

The Cape has had an unusual visitor who arrived Tuesday and has become quite a celebrity in Dennis. The southern guest has somehow come further north than any of his relatives. This guest, affectionately called Dennis, is a manatee. Never before has a manatee been reported this far north in the Atlantic Ocean. When the water temperature drops below 60 degrees, manatees are unlikely to survive. Therefore, wildlife groups are orchestrating a rescue this weekend for "Dennis". If the rescuers succeed , the manatee will be transported to Sea World in Orlando, where it will be rehabilitated and then released. The plan is to lure the manatee to shore with lettuce, envelop it in a net and lift the 600 to 800 pound manatee out of the water with a crane. They hope to load it into a cargo plane, where veterinarians will shower the manatee with water until it arrives to Orlando.

In the meantime, Sesuit Harbor in Dennis has become a tourist destination. Hordes of visitors have descended on the town and what is usually a very quiet time of the year, has turned into a carnival atmosphere with an environmental police officer working crown control over the past two days. I hope he makes it to Florida safely.

His gifts of silk fabric, toys, porcelain, lacquered pieces and tea are on display as well as costumes of the period. Currently there is an exhibit of more than two dozen costumes and accessories from 1825 to 1925. These costumes will be on display until October 5th. For more info visit hsoy.org.

Annual Yarmouth Seaside Festival

Columbus Day weekend is the last of the very busy weekends on the Cape. The Yarmouth Seaside Festival (30th year!)is held every year on Columbus Day weekend and is a great place to bring the family. It takes place on Route 28 in South Yarmouth and features activities such as kid's rides, log rolling, arts & crafts, moonwalk, face painting, pumpkin decorating contests, greased pole contest...the list goes on and on. There's also a 5K road race, canoe & kayak race, and sand sculpture contest on Bass River Beach. Sunday night fireworks on Seagull beach top off the activities.

There's enough to keep even the most active kids busy and happy. And of course, there's no festival without good food. Sample local restaurant food like Captain Parker's clam chowder. If you need an excuse to come to the Cape, the Seaside Festival is definitely one. For more information, visit www.yarmouthseasidefestival.com or call 508-778-1008.

Rainy Day Activities

After an absolutely beautiful week with cool, sunny days, the rain has arrived! Friday has been windy with intermittent rain. Our in house golf group came back from the golf course rather went and in need of early check in to get into dry clothes! We are hoping tomorrow will be more golf friendly.

Although I enjoy the occasionally stormy day, I know that this weather doesn't beckon people to the Cape. I thought maybe activities for rainy days might be appropriate. Of course if you're coming to the Cape to relax, our indoor heated pool and new hot tub is a great place to relax and spend the afternoon swimming, soaking in the tub and reading a book.

I love to watch the ocean when the weather is inclement and sometimes drive to a beach and observe the ocean from the comfort of my car. One of my front office employees, Charles, who is a native of the Cape suggests driving to Coast Guard Beach in the National Seashore, bringing a box lunch, and parking on the bluff to "watch the breakers and the seagulls & terns fighting the wind". Kalmus Beach in Hyannis is very popular with wind surfers on day like to today.

Of course there are a myriad of museums in the area including the Cultural Center, Maritime Museum, JFK Museum, Cahoon Museum of Art, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Cape Cod Children's Museum. This is just a short list of the museums for there are many more.

There's also shopping at the Cape Cod Mall. For the children and families bowling at Ryan's Family Amusement is a fun way to spend the afternoon or evening. We are offering a Rainy Day Special of $59.99 per night so call us at 508-775-6322 to book your room.

Harwich Cranberry Arts and Crafts Festival

Cape Cod has many festivals throughout the year and my favorite are in the fall. This weekend, September 12-14, the 32nd Annual Harwich Cranberry Arts and Crafts Festivals is held in Harwich. This festival, which offers something for the whole family, is considered one of the top festivals in the country. It features carnival rides, bands, food, and one of the finest arts and crafts fairs which is held under four giant tents at Harwich High School. Friday night at 8PM will feature fireworks at Red River Beach.

There is a $7 admission to the fairgrounds and children under 12 have free admission. On Saturday, there are free shuttle buses around town. All this fun and the proceeds go a non-profit group that gives assistance to local children in need. Visit their website, www.harwichcranberryfestival.org or call 508-432-7166 for more information.

The Tidewater is only 15 to 20 minutes from Harwich and we are offering a Manager's Special rate of $79.99 for the weekend.

Evening Walk

After a day of work, I love to unwind by taking a walk. One of my favorite walks leads to a small beach only 3/4's of a mile from the Tidewater. I take an immediate left out of the hotel onto Baxter Avenue which borders the west side of our property. At the end of Baxter is a small beach which seems like paradise after being on Route 28. I have been there during the day when it is crowded with people, but my favorite time is at dusk. Usually at this time I have the beach to myself, and if I time it right, I can watch the sunset over Hyannis Harbor. Yesterday was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen, with the brilliant orange reflecting on the water! I can walk across the beach and if the tide is low I can walk back onto the road and walk to Hyannis.

This is a wonderful way to end the day when I can fit it in. Just looking at the water makes the stress of the day melt away. If you visit the Tidewater, ask and we will direct you to the short or long version of the walk.

Can't believe it's over!

Wow! Summer's almost over. A very hectic two months with both swimming pools and the picnic area full of families came to a very abrupt end. This morning our breakfast diner was hopping and full of the laughter (and whinning) of children but after 11 o'clock checkout a sudden calm fell over the hotel. We had a wonderful summer with over 25% of our guests being return customers. We also met many new families and couples many of whom commented how family and group friendly our hotel was. We had several family reunions and a couple of wedding parties who enjoyed the facility. My favorite part of my job as General Manager is meeting my guests and keeping up with our regulars who return on a regular basis.

While we still have many guests who are enjoying the beautiful weather and the sudden drop in rates, they are for the most part older retired couples that have the time and leisure to travel off season. This is actually my favorite time on Cape Cod. The traffic is better, the weather is still beautiful, and no long waits in my favorite restaurants. And for our customers, the best part is a sudden drop in rates. This week we are running a manager's special of $69.99 midweek and $79.99 on weekends.

Bird Haven

As I was reading the Boston Globe in the evening, I saw a picture of a beautiful hummingbird, the broad-billed hummingbird. Unlike the ruby-throated hummingbirds found on the Cape, this bird has an iridescent blue throat, a green belly and a reddish orange bill with a black tip. I was especially interested in this article because the Tidewater has a landscaped picnic area with perennial gardens next to the diner. Every evening, my husband and I bring our dinner to one of the tables next to the gardens and enjoy the beautiful flowers and the view of Mill Pond.

We especially enjoy watching the wildlife and the many beautiful birds that frequent the area. A couple of days ago, as I was relaxing I saw a hummingbird visiting my garden and flowers. He enjoyed extracting nectar from the phlox. He didn't appear to be the typical reddish color, but unfortunately, I didn't look closely enough for fear of scaring him away. Now that I know that we have a visitor in our area, I'll look more closely to see if the broad-billed is visiting the Tidewater. Nonetheless, I do enjoy the peaceful evenings and watching our fine feathered friends. For the dedicated birders, this little oasis on route 28 is a retreat for many birds.

If you come to the Tidewater, enjoy a picnic outdoors and lookout for the many birds that visit us.

Summer Help!!!!

I have definitely been ignoring my blog this summer. This is one the most challenging summers we've had in our quest for good employees. Every summer we have been able to bring seasonal workers from Jamaica for six months on an HB2 visa, but this year our government would not pass legislation to allow returning employees after the cap was reached in January. Being an election year, no one wanted to make a decision. This has had a very negative impact on the Cape and the business who were used to having the same experience help return every year. Our employees lived on property, worked hard, had a positive attitude, and were like family.

This year we are using the summer help on a J1 visa mainly from Eastern Europe. One young lady is in medical student, another young man swam in the Olympics in Greece. They are wonderful students but only here for two months. Training has been a challenge and the turnover high. As much as I love summer, I haven't had much of chance to enjoy it.

On a positive note, our customers won't be able to see the difference for a few dedicated employees are working harder than ever to help us so that our property shines and all our customers needs are met. I have an ad in the help-wanted again this week so wish me good luck. We are now looking for a qualified executive housekeeper so that I can give up that title!

Ice Cream

Summer is synonymous with ice cream and I haven't found better ice cream than on the Cape. About 3 miles from the Tidewater on Route 28 in South Yarmouth is my favorite ice cream shop, Cape Cod Creamery. You can't miss it with its bright yellow and blue Adirondack chairs and umbrellas, lining the front of the colorful shop. On a hot summer day there are usually long lines weaving around the building, but it's well worth the wait.

All the flavors are named after Cape Cod localities and have such picturesque names as Sandyneck Snickers, Bass River Blackberry, Cappaquiddick Chocolate Chip...and are all homemade on the premises. I have a sweet tooth and especially love ice cream,so my husband and I are one of their most frequent visitors. My favorite is Provincetown Pistachio.

Back on the Cape

My two week vacation to Greece is now just a pleasant memory. I arrived on the Cape last night and it feels like I never left. I am, however, much more rested. After spending three hectic days in Athens, my husband and I flew to his hometown of Alexandroupolis which is in the northern coast of Greece. Although it has some lovely beaches, it is not frequented by many tourists and is therefore more quiet and authentic than some tourist spots. We chose to spend our time just relaxing: morning coffee at an outdoor cafe, a few hours on the beach, lunch, nap, and then an evening walk downtown on the road hugging the coast with a variety of cafes and restaurants. Everything in Greece is outside in the summer and everywhere you go people make a habit of walking downtown and meeting with friends. It's a life that's easy to get used to.

Driving into the hotel it was amazing how much the flowers and flower boxes had grown in two weeks. My staff has been busy preparing for the beginning of our summer season which begins as soon as school is out. Other than a few weeds, the gardens and grounds looked beautiful. Both our indoor heated pool and outdoor pools are open and our new whirlpool spa is in full operation.

We are booking heavily for the summer, so if you haven't made reservations yet, give us a call and we'd love to help you with your vacation plans.

Vacationing in Greece

Just a note to let my blog friends know that I won't be writing a blog about the Cape for a couple of weeks for I am presently in Greece. Running a hotel is more than a full time job so my husband and I who are both from Greece took a couple of weeks off to visit the homeland.

We spent the first three days in Athens and walked much of the city. The blisters on the feet will attest to that! The weather has been mild during the day and cool at night which is perfect for walking. We visited Plaka, surrounding the Acropolis, and shopped the many shops and ate at a taverna on the steps leading to the Acropolis. Seeing the ancient Acropolis atop the chaotic, yet fascinating, city still amazes me. If you haven't been to Greece...make plans to visit.

Memorial Day Success

We're still recovering from a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! The weather was glorious and we had almost a full house. After a quiet winter and spring it was wonderful to see the property full of families and children picnicking, playing volleyball, softball and just relaxing on our picnic area. There are soccer tournaments on Memorial Day weekend and this year we had five teams and parents staying with us. Our property is perfect for groups since they're not stuck in their rooms or parking lot at night. The parents were able to enjoy visiting with each other while the kids were playing nearby. The smell of food from the BBQ's was tempting. Overall it was wonderful to see so many people relaxing and enjoy themselves.

Monday we had to hustle to get almost 100 rooms clean as everyone checked out for we were expecting a bus of senior citizens from Baton Rouge. It certainly is much quietier around here this week.

Whale Watching on Cape Cod

One of the favorite activities on Cape Cod is Whale Watching and this should prove to be one of the best years. In mid April groups of right whales were seen feeding and lounging near the surface in Race Point in Provincetown. They have actually been visible from the beach! The northern right whale is the world's most endangered great whale with an estimated 350 individuals remaining. State and federal officials say that an unprecedented number of right whales are feeding in the bay, with between 50 and 100 estimated to be in Cape Cod Bay. Typically, only 30 to 50 are seen in the spring when right whales return from breeding grounds off Georgia and Florida.

There two companies that offer whale watching:
The Dolphin Fleet in Provincetown, 800-826-9300, www.whalewatch.com
Hyannis Watcher in Barnstable Harbor,800-287-0374, www.whales.net

The Tidewater offers whale watching packages and we can reserve and do all the work for you. You only have to come and enjoy, we'll do the rest!

Visit the Cape on April School Vacation

April school vacation is when the Cape is again teaming with activity. This year Massachusetts vacation is running a bit later than usual, but we have been busy this week with families from Connecticut and Rhode Island who are enjoying their vacation a week earlier. Merchants are busy sprucing up and preparing for the influx of families. The popular miniature golf courses are putting the finishing touches on the landscaping and will be opening for the season. Also whale watching begins in mid April.

Many of my favorite restaurants which close in the fall have also opened (Skipper, Tugboats, Paddock). Last month the more family oriented "fast food" restaurants specializing fried seafood opened. "Fast food" only in service, certainly not in quality. Three of the most popular are Cooke's, Seafood Sam's, and Kreme and Kone.

And of course, there are many activities at the different venues geared towards families and children. With the mild weather we've had, walks on the beach and hikes on the National Seashore Trails are perfect ways to spend the day. We at the Tidewater are offering a school vacation special of $69.99 for Sunday through Thursday and $79.99 for Friday and Saturday. Heritage Museum is Opening

Now that April has arrived many attractions, shops and restaurants that are closed during the off season reopen. One of my favorite places to visit in the spring is the HERITAGE MUSEUM & GARDENS which reopened on April 1st. The Heritage Museums & Garden features three distinctive museum buildings set on 100 acres of gorgeous gardens. It is a wonderful place to spend a spring day walking the grounds and enjoying the vivid colors of the rhododendrons and daffodils. The flowers change with the seasons, so each season gives a different view of the gardens. During the holidays the grounds are a popular place to get into the holiday spirit with the enchanting light displays.

The Shaker round barn replica houses a collection of antique automobiles, the Art Museum houses an extensive collection of American folk art and an antique hand-carved carousel. The American History Museum houses military and Native American artifacts as well as antique toys. You can spend the entire day here and enjoy the lunch at the Carousel Cafe or bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the beautiful grounds. Throughout the year there are car shows, family events, workshops, and concerts.

The grounds open daily from April to October 31st from 10am to 5pm. For more details visit their website www.heritagemuseumsandgardens.org or call 508-888-3300. This past weekend we sold out of our 61 rooms that are open this time of year and our breakfast diner, Helen's diner, was hopping with hungry families. I think that our northern New England friends had enough of the snow and decided to get a taste of Spring on the Cape. The weather was absolutely beautiful on Saturday so we had many last minute travelers.

If you need a reason to come to the Cape other than rest and relaxation, why not come to attend the Cape & Islands Wellness Expo on March 8th from 10am to 6pm and on March 9th from 12pm to 4pm. This fair is the biggest health event on Cape Cod and is presented by Cape Healing Arts Magazine. Some of the finest educators, teachers and practitioners from the area will offer small informal classes. Workshop leaders, most from the local community, have volunteered their time to teach so that the workshops can be accessible to all. Most of the educators normally charge between $35 to $250 for the same workshops that are offered at a fraction of the price.

Keynote speaker will be Bernie Siegel, mind, body, spirit medicine pioneer and best selling author on the art of healing. His books include Love, Medicine & Miracles, Peace, Love & Healing, and How To Live Between Office Visits. A portion of the proceeds from Bernies's talk will be donated to the Cape's Kids Grieve Too!Program.

The Wellness Expo is located in The Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis (Formerly the Four Points by Sheraton). Before or after the Expo you can explore the many shops and restaurants on Main Street Hyannis, a short walk away. For detailed information and a schedule of workshops call 508-896-7117 or visit their website,

The Tidewater is only a five minute drive to the Wellness Expo and we are offering a special rate of $79.99 which includes breakfast and one ticket per night of stay. What better place to participate in improving your health than the Cape, where you can relax with peaceful walks on the beach. Call us at 800-338-6322 or 508-775-6322 for more information or to book a room.

Banana Bread Recipe

Along with gardening and reading, I love to cook. Running the hotel doesn't leave me much free time for creative cooking so I now stick to some basic proven recipes that are easy to make, but delicious also. Years ago, when my children attended Montessori Academy in Mobile, Alabama, I worked there as an assistant teacher. Everyday, we made a healthy snack for the children and one of the favorites was this banana bread. That was over 20 years ago and I still make it for my family and my daughters have also borrowed the recipe. I've tried many other banana bread recipes, but always come back to this one.

Banana Bread

1/2 cup butter, soft
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 overripe large bananas
(about 1 1/2 cups,mashed}
chopped nuts are optional

Beat butter with sugar. Add eggs and beat again. Add all dry ingredients and bananas and mix. I love nuts so I add quite a few. Bake in 9X9 pan or in muffin tins. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. Less time for muffins of course. In order to make them more healthy, I've used whole wheat flour, raw sugar, and I've cut the amount of butter in half. Still taste great! Taste great warm out of the oven.

19th Century Schooner Washes Ashore

A coastal storm on Cape Cod at the end of January unearthed a 19th century schooner and the remains washed up onto Newcomb Hollow Beach on Cape Cod. Stray boards often float in and out with the tide, but this is the whole backbone and ribs of an old wreck, with a few planks of hull still attached with wooden pegs. According to a National Seashore historian, this latest hulk is the largest and most intact wreck to come ashore in a decade. There were more than 3,500 shipwrecks in Cape waters between 1850 and 1980. Pieces often appear on shore, but not often of this magnitude.

The National Park Service, which has jurisdiction over the schoooner because it landed on the Cape Cod National Seahore, has examined, photographed, and mapped the wreckage. The debris will now be left to the whims of the tide and will probably either be buried by sand or get washed out again.

In the meantime, Newcombe Hollow has become a living museum. This beach which is usually desserted in the winter, was as busy as it usually is in summer. The parking lot was full and the curious were teaming around the wreck which resembled a beached whale. If you need a reason to come to the Cape why not come to view this unique exhibition. As they say "here today, gone tomorrow." It's next destination is where the tide will bring it.

What a Weekend!

I'm always trying to think of something of interest for our visitors to the Cape but this weekend all I could think of was "how can you beat this!" Last Sunday we had an almost blizzard on the Cape. I was driving on Route 6 with virtually no visibility, wind, and cars sliding on the highway. What a mess! I thought that winter had set in for good.

One week later, the snow is gone and Saturday and Sunday were sunny and absolutely beautiful - almost springlike. I woke up Sunday determined to take advantage of the mild day so I took off on a long walk. I took a left out of the hotel and onto Baxter Street which borders the hotel. Within ten minutes I was walking on a lovely beach at the bottom of Baxter. Beaches are so peaceful off season...just me and the seagulls and a few ducks. From there I followed the road that hugged the shore and walked to Hyannis Harbor and onto Main Street.

When the unseasonably warm weather arrives, I alway fool myself into thinking that spring is just around the corner. Hopefully, but probably not in New England. However, the Cape is considerably more mild in the winter. So those of you that only think of the Cape in the Summer, come off-season when you can enjoy the peace and the lower prices.

Last Minute Specials

It appears as if spring is arriving early on the Cape. Four days ago the temperature dipped to a frigid 9 degrees. Today we are in the mid 40's. By Monday, we are expected to hit 60! So take this opportunity to come to the Cape and enjoy a pseudo spring. Enjoy a walk on the beach, golf, shop or just come to relax and enjoy our indoor pool and hot tub.

Of course, we'd like you to stay at the Tidewater so we are offering a manager's special of $49.99 for one night or $45 per night if you stay more that one night. This offer is valid until January 17th. We might even upgrade you to one of waterview rooms with a private deck overlooking the water for no extra charge (depending on availability). Give us a call at 508-775-6322 and we'd love to help you with your reservation.

Golf on Cape Cod

Today is a beautiful and sunny day on the Cape with no snow! Many only think of the Cape for its beautiful beaches in the summer. What many don't know is that the Cape is one of the preeminent golf destinations in the United States. The Cape offers some of the finest golf courses with over 40 courses to choose from that range from championship regulation courses to challenging Par 3's and executive layouts. From beginner to professional there are courses for everyone.

The weather on the Cape is more temperate since we are surrounded by water. There are courses that are open almost year round. In early spring when most golfers have cabin fever, many courses are open, while most of the Northeast is still under snow. And of course, in the fall, when the crowds leave the Cape, the Cape becomes an economical getaway with ideal golf conditions.

I have provided links to some of the golf websites on Cape Cod that give information on the golf courses. We at the Tidewater specialize in customizing golf packages. We can provide accommodations and reserve tee times for a couple, a group of golf buddies, or a family golf getaway. We work closely with our Yarmouth golf courses, Bass River and Bayberry Hills, both of which are rated very highly by Golf Digest. Bass River offers spectacular views of Bass River and is rated 4 star by Golf Digest and Bayberry Hills was selected by Boston Sports Review as "Best of Cape Cod". We also work closely with Dennis Highland and Dennis Pines which was voted "Best golf course on Cape Cod" by Boston Magazine 2004. Captain's Golf Course, Cranberry Valley, and Blue Rock are also favorites of our guests.

The Tidewater can plan your entire golf vacation and reserve your tee times or we can just provide accommodations for your group. Let us do the work for you. And, of course, after golf we can give you recommendations for some of the finest restaurants on the Cape, from simple pubs with fresh seafood to gourmet restaurants. The Tidewater is perfect for large groups with its landscaped picnic area overlooking Mill Pond and Helen's Diner for a hearty meal before heading for the golf courses. It's also ideal for families with its two pools, playground area, and proximity to beaches and mini golf courses.

Call me at 508-775-6322 to book your golf getaway or with any questions.
