Brewster in Bloom

This weekend marks the 23rd anniversary of the Brewster in Bloom Festival. The festival started 23 years ago to celebrate the profusion of daffodils gracing Main Street. Brewster in Bloom grew into a wonderful three day celebration of spring.

Events this weekend include: concerts, a golf tournament, juried fine arts & crafts show, antiques and collectible fair, Brewster in Bloom Run, Kids Fair, Spring Dance and MUCH MORE! The highlight is the parade the parade at 1pm on Sunday, May 3rd. The parade kicks off at Underpass Road, travels west on Route 6A and ends at Swamp Road.

Sounds like a great way to enjoy the beauty of spring and small town festival.

Earth Day Celebrations on Cape Cod

Tomorrow is Earth Day and there are many ways for families to celebrate the day on Cape Cod and bring awareness of the environment to children. Visiting the Salt Pond Visitor's Center in Eastham and taking a hike on one of the many trails of the National Seashore would be a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Cape. There are also walks on the beach, biking on the Rail Trail, whale watching among many other ways to enjoy nature.

There are also more formal ways to celebrate. The Heritage Museum and Gardens is having a family oriented Earth Day Celebration. The Cape Cod Children's Museum also has many activities for families. Also looks like the rain will stop by tomorrow...

Spring Has Arrived on Cape Cod!

What a day! After many false starts, we are enjoying a beautiful, sunny spring day today with highs reaching close to 70. This is my favorite time on the Cape when the daffodils and spring flowering trees are in bloom and offer the promise of summer. All my favorite seafood restaurants open this weekend for the season. With school vacation, all the mini golfs also open this weekend. In addition the whale watch out of Provincetown starts this week.

We have many golfers from the North at the hotel who are enjoying perfect golf weather. It's also a great time to take walks on the beach or hikes in the many trails at the National Seashore. In general this is a perfect time to take a couple of days away from the routine and enjoy the beauty of Cape Cod. We are offering the school vacation special this week of $69.99 Sunday - Thursday and $79.99 on Friday and Saturday. Come on down!

Ice Cream

I love ice cream and my favorite ice cream shop, The Cape Cod Creamery, is open for the season. The opening of seasonal restaurants and attractions marks the beginning of summer for me. Nothing spells spring and summer better than ice cream. At the Creamery, the ice cream is made on the premises and is delicious. Its bright and cheerful blue umbrellas and yellow Adirondack chairs stand out on Route 28 in South Yarmouth. In the summer all the chairs and picnic tables are full as the line weaves to the parking lot. Amazingly the lines move very fast.

The flavors are named after Cape Cod towns and are very creative. The best part is the taste...rich and creamy. My favorite is Provincetown Pistachio which is a creamy color (no green food coloring)and chock full of nuts. Every time I go I resolve to try a new flavor, but the pistachio always beckons me. Next time you're on the Cape take a trip to the Cape Cod Creamery and relax in their comfortable chairs as you enjoy the rich taste of real ice cream.

Heritage Museums & Gardens

April 1st marks the opening of the Heritage Museums and Gardens. For gardeners and lovers of flowers and nature this is a great place to visit while on Cape. The 100 acre site includes acres of gardens and seasonal flowers, the Hart Family Maze Garden, a labyrinth, antique automobiles, bird carvings, a hand carved carousel and both seasonal and permanent exhibits. This marks the 40th anniversary of this popular attraction. The new seasonal exhibit is named "A Bird in the Hand".

Garden Show in Hyannis

Gardening is one of my favorite pastimes and forms of relaxation. With the cold spring we've had so far, it seems as if we'll never be able to plant our annuals, but it's just around the corner. I've already started cleaning the flower beds and preparing new ones in my house and planting yellow and purple pansies in planters for some early color.

My sister, Helen, is also a gardener and volunteers her time to plant the many flower beds and planters at the Tidewater. She will be starting the early plantings of pansies this weekend. In the summertime, my husband and I often bring our dinner to the patio outside the breakfast diner, Helen's Diner, which overlooks the picnic area and Mill Creek. The flower bed around the patio is alive with color and birds who come to visit. Last summer we had the pleasure of seeing many hummingbirds.

This weekend, April 4th, is the perfect time for the Garden Show at the Resort and Conference Center in Hyannis. It's a great place to get motivated, get new ideas and mingle with other gardeners. It's only a matter of time before we can "play in the dirt" again.
