Blizzard on Cape Cod

What a storm! We've been lucky my last three winters on the Cape with virtually no snow, so when I heard the forecast of snow with blizzard conditions, I thought "they're going to be wrong again".  Boy was I wrong.  Woke up this morning to see that everything was white! I couldn't even see out the window from all the snow plastered on the window panes. When I tried to shovel the front walkway, I nearly got blown away.  As soon as I shoveled, the snow blew right back.

We had someone scheduled to plow the parking lot,  but due to the blizzard conditions, one of their trucks go stuck and one was down, so we didn't get plowed out until 1PM.  Since our guests were stranded here, we opened Helen's Diner so that they could have a hearty breakfast.  Everyone was happy to fill their bellies! One customer even helped us to shovel. What an adventure.  I'm definitely not a winter person and after this experience, I yearn for spring, summer, or fall even more. This is what we have to put up with to enjoy the beauty of New England seasons. I do have to admit, seeing everything covered with snow in the morning was a beautiful sight.  If only we didn't have to deal with the problems snow causes.

Cape Cod Art and Nature Blog

I'm always looking for information on Cape Cod that I can share with my readers.  I have fallen in love with the Cape since moving to the Cape three years ago and I've spent a great deal of time trying to educate myself on all things Cape Cod.  Unfortunately, running a hotel leaves me little free time to explore the Cape in the depth that I would like. I just discovered a blog by Mary Richmond who is a Cape native and an artist, writer, naturalist and teacher. She spends time exploring Cape Cod, gives art lessons, and also gives custom nature tours to individuals, families, and groups. Her blog has beautiful pictures and information on the nature of the Cape. Here's her blog:  http://www.capecodartandnature.blogspot.com/

More Christmas Strolls on Cape Cod

Two of the more picturesque towns on the Cape will hold their Christmas Strolls this weekend: Chatham and Osterville.  Osterville is one of my favorite towns on the Cape.  It still has that old Cape Cod feel and is small and cozy...just perfect for an old-fashioned Christmas. The weather promises to be sunny and cold.  Just perfect for a Christmas stroll.  For information on these strolls, visit http://www.ostervillevillage.com/, and http://www.chathaminfo.com/

The Tidewater is offering it's off season special of $59.99 for one night or $49.99 for two or more nights.  Hope to see you.

Cape Cod "Drive of a Lifetime"

While looking at the National Geographic website, I discovered that Cape Cod was listed on their "Drives of a Lifetime".  What an honor.  The drive starts in Sandwich, follows  6A to Provincetown and then down to Chatham, Hyannis and Falmouth and Woods Hole. I recommend this drive to those who want to get a real feel for the Cape.  I've included a link to their website so you can read the descriptions and find out how to get a map. http://traveler.nationalgeographic.com/drives/cape-cod.html It's best to try the drive during the off season so as to not get stuck in heavy traffic.

Cape Cod Central Railroad Santa's Express

December 13th is the last trip on the Cape Cod Central Railroad's Santa Express. This is a wonderful activity for families with young children.  Take advantage of the opportunity to first read the "Polar Express" to your children and then book a trip on Cape Cod's version.  This is a fun filled trip with activities for the kids and a stop to "Santa's workshop" where they'll see Mr and Mrs. Claus and the elves and drink hot chocolate.  My cousins brought their young grandson and had a great time.

Bring a toy with you that will be given to less fortunate children.  Visit this website to make reservations, http://www.capetrain.com/.

Sandwich Holly Days on Cape Cod

Another holiday celebration on the Cape: Sandwich Holly Days.  Holly Days features a holiday handbell concert, pancakes with Santa, a tree lighting, open houses and the traditional candlelit Community Sing.  The highlight for the young is the "North Pole Express" which is Sandwich's version of the "Polar Express".  The train runs Dec 4th and 6th.  Families can board the Cape Cod Central Railroad in Sandwich or Hyannis.  Along the way they stop at "Santa's workshop" where they meet Mr and Mrs Claus and the Elves and enjoy hot chocolate and favors.  The children will love the train, so bring them to the Cape where they can enjoy a traditional small town Christmas.

Stay at the Tidewater and enjoy our Manager's Special.
