"Share the Light" at Pilgrim Monument

Thanksgiving weekend is the when all the holiday and Christmas displays and festivals begin on Cape Cod. The lighting of the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown kicks off the season. This is one of the Cape most beautiful and enduring traditions. The monument is illuminated in a ceremony and it glows until New Year's Day.

The official Lighting Ceremony will take place on November 24, 2011 from 5-7 pm at the Pilgrim Monument & Provincetown Museum(PMPM). Nineteen strands of more than 3,500 white bulbs will sweep down from the top of the Pilgrim Monument, creating the appearance of a large Christmas tree each evening to commemorate Provincetown as the First Landing Place of the Mayflower Pilgrims on Nov. 21, 1620. As always, the lights referred to as the “Pilgrim Landing Lights,” will be lit precisely at 6 p.m. and will remain lit through the holiday season until Jan. 6, 2011. The Lighting Ceremony is open to the public and free of charge.

As part of the festivities, pianists Paul Bisaccia and John Thomas will play four-hand American classics — from marches to ragtime to Gershwin — on the Steinway grand piano. Surprise musical guests will add to the festive scene. Bisaccia and Thomas are featured performers in the Monumental Music series, which recently completed its third season of summer concerts. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Provincetown Business Guild, and additional music provided by special guest deejay Chris Racine.

Although the best spot for viewing the lighting is on the grounds of the Monument itself, other good vantage points for watching are the Bas Relief Park on Bradford Street behind Town Hall, along Commercial Street in front of Town Hall, and the area around MacMillan Pier including the parking lot at the base of the pier.
