The Yarmouth Seaside Festival, currently celebrating its 36th anniversary also coincides with Yarmouth's 375th anniversary. It is held annually on Columbus Day weekend. This family oriented festival has grown into a weekend full of events such as: craft fair of more than 125 crafters from all over the country, a giant parade, continual musical entertainment, high-quality children’s events, kayak and canoe race, 5K road race, greased pole contests, pie-eating contests, fireworks display, to name just a few.

Fall on the Cape.

Fall is my favorite season on the Cape. After a busy summer, everything slows down, the cooler weather arrives, the traffic improves and everything is still open. We even have beautiful foliage on the Cape. My favorite is the change of colors on the dunes as the plants turn from green to shades of rust, orange, purple, yellow, and red. Beautiful!

Nantucket Daffodil Festival

The island of Nantucket spends a whole weekend celebrating the beautiful symbol of spring, the daffodil! "The 40th Annual Nantucket Daffodil Festival Weekend is April 27 - April 29 this year. "Celebrating the 40th". What started out as a simple celebration 40 years ago is now a weekend long celebration. The Daffodil Festival on Nantucket now includes art shows, tours, parades (including the antique car parade and tailgate picnic), exhibitions, contests, lectures, and, of course, the annual Nantucket Daffodil Flower Show. There are activities for all ages, and faithful festival-goers dress up for the occasion and participate enthusiastically! There is a Daffy Hat Contest, a Children's Parade featuring decorated bikes, strollers, wagons, and other self-propelled vehicles. The Pine Woods Morris Dancers often perform throughout the day at various locations.

The right whales are returning to the Cape earlier than usual this year. According the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies several were seen on the Cape.  "They’ve probably been here for a fairly long time already,” noted Dr. Stormy Mayo, director of Right Whale Habitat Studies at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies.  Sunday afternoon, when the Center made the aerial track across the Bay, they spotted 12 endangered North Atlantic right whales, 2.4-percent of the entire world’s population, cavorting about. "That’s a big deal,” Mayo said. “I think we’re in a time of change. What’s happened particularly over the last four years, is Cape Cod Bay is more and more important to right whales. So much that half of the entire population has come into the Bay over the last four years. Considering we’re not out there all the time it’s probably more than that.” The estimated world population is about 510 whales, confined to the North Atlantic, primarily on this side.

I found another wonderful Christmas activity for those who still need help getting into the spirit or those who love to take advantage of every opportunity to celebrate Christmas: the Historic Bass River Holiday Cookie Stroll. Anything with the word "cookie" in it is appealing to me. This benefits the South Yarmouth Library and is held Saturday, December 14th, from 10:00 to 3:00pm.  The "ticket" is actually a cookbook with the recipes of all cookies served on this two-mile walking tour to eleven sites. The tour also includes an Open House at the South Yarmouth Library.. Free trolley transport will be available between groups of houses. All of the proceeds go to support the South Yarmouth Library. Cider and cranberry bread will be served at the library.   Tickets are limited.

Brewster in Bloom

Enjoy the thousands of flowers planted along the roadsides to mark the return of spring to Brewster!  April 26 - 28th, Brewster celebrates with "Brewster in Bloom Festival". The 27^th Annual Brewster in Bloom will present the Kami Lyle Trio, sponsored by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, at Drummer Boy Park on Sunday, April 28^th from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. The concert is free and attendees should bring their own chair, and even a picnic! Depending on the temperature, this will be presented under the tent or from the gazebo. April School Vacation at the Tidewater Inn.

April School Vacation for Massachusetts schools is here and, hopefully, spring has finally arrived. The Tidewater is an affordable option for Cape Cod and perfect for families with its oversized indoor pool, picnic area, playground and breakfast diner. Vacation week marks the official opening for most of the businesses that closed during the off season. Favorite waterfront restaurants, mini golf, ice cream shops and many others will be opening for the season. This week is a very popular time for the Cape. The weather is usually mild, the hotel rates are still low, and there's much to do on the Cape. There's many child oriented activities during vacation week and the Cape is geared to family fun.

The Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary is another wonderful way to spend the day with the children during vacation week. It's a 1,100 acre retreat that showcases the Cape's diverse habitats, beaches, woods, salt marshes and ponds. They offer bird walks led by a naturalist, educational programs, and guided tours of the Cape Cod National Seashore. There are even evening lectures and camping facilities. The right whales are returning to the Cape and the Whale Watch out of Provincetown has already started. Spend the day exploring the National  Seashore and enjoy some of the scenic vistas along the way or hike one of the scenic trails and proceed to Provincetown and the whale watch. After the whale watch enjoy dinner in one of the many wonderful resaurants that Provincetown has to offer. This is one of my favorite ways to spend the day on the Cape.

Osterville Chocolate Festival

If you like chocolate, the weekend of February 4th is the time to visit Cape Cod. Osterville, one of my favorite villages on the Cape, is having its "7th Annual Osterville Chocolate Fest". It will take place in Osterville, a very picturesque village, on Saturday February 5th. There will be all sorts of "chocolate" events, activities, and treats such as chocolate sculptures, martinis, treats, and books. The highlight will be a Dessert Contest with proceeds going to the Hyannis Food Pantry which helps many needy people on the Cape. New Year's Eve on Cape Cod Railroad

If you're looking for a unique way to spend New Year's Eve, why not try a dinner train on Cape Cod! The Cape Cod Railroad, www.capetrain.com, is featuring a New Year's Eve party with a 6 course gourmet meal, live music, party favors and champagne.
