Sagamore Bridge

Coming to Cape Cod tomorrow? Construction on the Sagamore Bridge is almost over, but there will be a couple more weeks of work.  Tomorrow, Thursday, the bridge is being repaved and there will be long delays to cross the bridge.  It will be best to try to avoid it altogether if you can and use the Bourne Bridge if necessary. According to WBZ radio the bridge will close altogther from 12 noon tomorrow, but according to the Chamber it will be partially open.

Brewster in Bloom on Cape Cod

Enjoy the thousands of flowers planted along the roadsides to mark the return of spring to Brewster!  This weekend Brewster celebrates with the the 24th annual "Brewster in Bloom Festival".  The town has a myriad of activities for everyone to enjoy: big bang dance at Ocean's Edge, antique and collectible fair, 5K fun run, juried arts & crafts show, Kid's fair, square dance and ending with a parade. The fun starts Friday night with the  Big Band sound of the Moonlighters with hors d’oeuvres, dancing, cash bar. Most of the activities take place on Saturday. Cape Cod Lavender Farm

Cape Cod Lavender farm opened for the season on April 1st. They are located on twenty secluded areas overlooking Island Pond in Harwich.  The farm is also the home of the Sutphin family who own and operate the farm and opened it  to the public in 1995.  It is one of the largest lavender farms on the East Coast and boasts over 14,000 plants. They started by selling lavender plants and loose lavender and now offer more than 20 lavender related product. This year they will be offering their "Harwich Blue", a hardy lavender variety they developed which is especially suited to Cape Cod climate.

The farm, surrounded by conservation land, is a beautiful and peaceful place to spent the day. The perfect time to visit is in late June and early July when the plants are in bloom. Earth Day at the Heritage on Cape Cod

My sister, Helen, and I are avid gardeners and last summer when she visited we decided to spend the day at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, http://www.heritagemuseumsandgardens.org/. There are miles and miles of walking paths, three museums and a beautiful carosel. Walking the tranquil paths is a relaxing way to spend the day and spring is one of the best times of the year to visit. The gardens are famous for their rhododendrons which bloom in May. The Heritage just opened for its 41st season and is celebrating Earth day on April 24th and are gearing the activities to families and children.  Here's an excerpt from their website on the celebration:

"In honor of both Arbor Day and Earth Day, Heritage Museums & Gardens is
hosting an exciting event for all ages. Stroll through our grounds and learn about tree care from our local arborist, tour our tree collections with our Director of Horticulture Jeanie Gillis at 11am and 3pm, partake in a tree scavenger hunt, sculpt with natural objects, build a self-propelled boat out of a milk carton, play a game of “recycle relay,” participate in our family green-themed tour at 12:45pm, get an ‘green’ balloon and your face painted by an international artist Kara Andrews from Art on the Spot, explore more about green living from community vendors and get a sneak peak at elements from our newest feature Hidden Hollow: A Nature Discovery Center. April School Vacation Activities & Specials

April School Vacation for Massachusetts schools is fast approaching (April 15 - April 24th) and the Tidewater is getting ready. Vacation week marks the official opening for most of the businesses that closed during the off season. Favorite waterfront restaurants, mini golf, ice cream shops and many others will be opening for the season. This week is a very popular time for the Cape. The weather is usually mild, the hotel rates are still low, and there's much to do on the Cape. There's many child oriented activities during vacation week and the Cape is geared to family fun. As the date approaches I will be detailing some of the many special activities scheduled during this week.

Cape Cod Children's Museum has a full week of fun and educational activities for kids. Visit their website, http://www.capecodchildrensmuseum.org/
The Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary is another wonderful way to spend the day with the children during vacation week. It's a 1,100 acre retreat that showcases the Cape's diverse habitats, beaches, woods, salt marshes and ponds. They offer bird walks led by a naturalist, educational programs, and guided tours of the Cape Cod National Seashore. There are even evening lectures and camping facilities. In April , the Whale Watch out of Provincetown begins again. Spend the day exploring the National Seashore and enjoy some of the scenic vistas along the way or hike one of the scenic trails and proceed to Provincetown and the whale watch. After the whale watch enjoy dinner in one of the many wonderful resaurants that Provincetown has to offer. This is one of my favorite ways to spend the day on the Cape.

And of course, all of the mini golfs open for the season during this week. Two of the largest, Pirates Cove and Skull Island, are in Yarmouth. There's lots more to do...bike trail, hiking, walks on the beach...this is just a sampling. At the end of the day just relax in our hot tub while the kids enjoy the pool.

What a Weekend!

We had a beautiful stretch of weather on Cape Cod culminating in an amazingly sunny, springlike weekend.  We sold out Saturday even without our Tidewater sign! (New sign has been ordered and will be ready shortly.) The Cape was full of hockey players participating in the Lobster Pot Tournament.  We had a group of very active 10 year old hockey players.  They, along with other guests and families, certainly took advantage of our indoor pool and enjoyed swimming and lounging around the pool. Many mentioned our newly painted beach mural on the wall and how it brightened up the room.  In addition, our guests took full advantage of the beautiful weather and used the picnic area and playground. Overall, it was a perfect weekend.

Monday was cloudy with light rain, but I took advantage of a dry hour and planted pansies in the planters outside of our office building.  The rain today is just what we need.  The crocuses are up and the daffodils are well along...I love spring and the bright yellows, purples, and blues of spring flowers.  Speaking of daffodils, why not plan a trip to the Cape the weekend of April 23rd to enjoy the Nantucket Daffodil Festival when the whole island celebrates daffodils.
