February School Vacation

Tomorrow is the first day of February and school vacation is just around the corner. This winter has been tougher than the winters we've had the past few years. Even the Cape got some snow which has already melted. It's a good time to leave the winter chores and routines behind and plan some quality time with the children. With the dire condition of the economy, families have little money to budget for vacations. With this in mind, we are offering some low rates for vacation week so that families can enjoy a few days of relaxation.

Of course, we have our heated indoor pool and breakfast diner open, but we will also have activities for the kids. There will also be many activities throughout the Cape for families to enjoy during this break. I'll be writing another blog with the details. But just enjoying our hot tub while the kids swim in the pool might be enough.

Our special during vacation is $59.99 Sunday - Thursday and $69.99 for Friday and Saturday. Call us for reservations or information.

Spring on Cape Cod?

A couple days ago as I was walking around the property I saw two very round robins. I always considered robins a harbinger of spring, so they brought a smile to my face as I watched them. While there's virtually no snow on the ground, today is sunny and in the low 20's and spring seems far away.

That evening as I was reading the Globe I saw an article stating that birders are reporting mindboggling numbers of robins this winter (up to 80,000 in Barnstable). Seems that the numbers of robins are actually increasing in the region. Because robins are hardy and robust, they are adaptable and very adept at finding food. There also appear to be plenty of fruit and berries around for the robins. We at the Tidewater have many perennial gardens and we usually wait until spring to trim them so that birds can eat the seeds.

According to the Mass Audubon society, many robins have been around for most of the winter. These robins have probably come from further north and are eating the last remaining winter fruit and once it's gone, will move south. Despite reading this information, seeing the little fat robins brightened my day and reminded me that spring is not far away. In the meantime, I'm enjoying cozy evenings in front of the fireplace when I am at home. Stay warm and keep an eye out for the robins.

Ivory gull seen in Plymouth

Yesterday, as I was driving to work from Plymouth, I was listening to the public radio station and heard a story about a rare Arctic bird that was sighted in Gloucester. It was a fascinating story as they described the beautiful ivory gull, a pure white gull that grows to 16 to 17 inches long with black feet and black eyes. These birds typically spend the winter on ice north of Newfoundland. No one knows why the bird came so far south. The next day I read in the Globe that another ivory gull had been sighted in Plymouth. The chances of this bird being sighted twice in Massachusetts was described as likely as lightning striking twice in the same place!

It was the first Massachusetts sighting of the species in more than two years, which usually makes its home in the high Arctic. Hundreds of birdwatchers from as far as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland had come to the parking lot in Gloucester where the ivory gull was seen. Bird-watchers would otherwise have to travel to the top of the world to see the ivory gull. Scientists believe the species is declining which makes it even more of an attraction.

If you're a birder why not come to the Tidewater for the weekend and travel the short half hour drive to Plymouth harbor to see the ivory gull. There's no telling how long the two ivory gulls would stay in this area so come on down.

Symphony on Cape Cod

This coming weekend, January 24 & 25, the Cape Symphony Orchestra in Hyannis will be playing Haydn's "The Creation", in celebration of the Haydn bicentennial, with conductor Jung-Ho Pak and guest artist Kristen Watson, soprano.

Haydn’s monumental masterpiece dramatically depicts the creation of heaven and earth, plants and animals, and on the last day, mankind. Presented following a more transparent and emotional approach than traditional performances of the work, the epic oratorio fuses an orchestra, a chorus and three vocal soloists representing three angels - Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael. In their debut with the CCSO, the world-renowned GloriƦ Dei Cantores chorus fills the hall with an authentic and compelling interpretation of this sacred music. A celebration of the Haydn bicentennial.

For more information visit their website, www.capesymphony.org or call 508-362-111. If you come to the Cape for the performance, you can also enjoy the weekend with a stay at the Tidewater and enjoy our Manager's Special of $59.99 for one night or $99.99 for two nights.

Martin Luther King Weekend

This weekend is a bit busier than usual with the Martin Luther King holiday and the improvement in the weather. Despite the cold temperatures, today is bright and sunny and without the brisk wind we had the past few days, it almost feels balmy. I called my brother in Chicago and they were housebound with temperatures of 40 below zero with the wind chill! Makes our temperatures much more tolerable.

There is a celebration tomorrow sponsored by Cape Cod Community College in celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday. It will be held the Federated Church of Hyannis on Main Street at 3:00pm.

White Cape Cod

Looking out of my office window while trying to decide on a blog, all I can see is a blanket of snow. Although I don't like winter and love spring, summer, and fall on the Cape, I have to admit the property looks beautiful and peaceful blanketed in snow. Even the pond across the street that is home to swans and many ducks is entirely white. The swans are resting on their nest nestled between the grasses.

This is the first time since 2006 when I arrived on the Cape that we've had any snow accumulation. It usually doesn't stay on the ground for long though. When the Boston area gets snow, it seldom snows on the Cape, but this time is an exception. As of 4:30pm we've had about 4 inches accumulation and it's still snowing. It should clear by tonight and the roads will be clean for weekend travel. Many have Martin Luther King's Birthday off and therefore have a long weekend, so we are booking well for the weekend (if it doesn't snow again)!

Theatre on the Cape

Cape Cod has many theatre venues during the peak season, including the very popular Cape Playhouse in Dennis. However, there's also great theatre during the off season. Neil Simon's, "The Sunshine Boys", is playing at the Barnstable Comedy Club on 6A from January 8th through the 25th. Larry Marsland and David Ellswoarth star as the team of Lewis and Clark, the Sunshine Boys, who together achieved fame with their gags, classic sketches and faultless comic timing over 43 years. Mutual dislike has kept them apart for the last 11 years, and old feelings flare when they reunite for a TV special.

For ticket information and theatre times, call 508-362-6333. Sounds like a fun evening.

Back to Normal

The holidays are over and the flurry of activity on Cape for the month of December is over. Decorations are down and we at the Tidewater are going to use this quiet time to upgrade our rooms in order to improve our guests' experience. Last year we completed extensive work improving the exterior of the buildings: new roofs, new fence around our outdoor pool and entrance, painting of all buildings, privacy dividers in our water view balconies, and new and expanded flower beds are a few of the improvements.

This month we will painting all the rooms and updating the furniture in the entire complex. By late spring, all the rooms will be freshly painted and the rooms will have a more contemporary and fresh look with the new furniture. The Tidewater is an older property, but we're always doing something to improve the appearance and our guests' experience.

Of course, we're still open during this period and to entice our guests to visit during this quiet time, we are offering the following special for January: one night $59.99, two nights $99.99 and for the greatest savings, three nights for $129.99. Come, relax, and enjoy our indoor heated pool and new hot tub.
